The
current rage in the decorative interior products industry is to
shout and proclaim "we are green, eco-sensitive, earth friendly,
biologically and politically correct".
While
it is noteworthy to recognize the importance of responsible wallcovering
manufacturing and the passion attached to it by today's designers,
it is certainly not a new concept. Unfortunately many of today's
loudest shouters would make you believe that this concept is something
they started. However, the truth is, many of us have been involved
with manufacturing earth friendly wallcovering for a long time.
In fact, Terrapointe, through H & S Sales,
Inc. has been a leader in this issue for almost a quarter of a century.
In many cases we've been at it longer than those self-proclaimed
"green companies" have been in business.
All
the product featured in Specialty
Wallcovering is manufactured in Japan, a country very sensitive
to earth responsible manufacturing and a leader in environmental
protection.
There
are two major issues, "safe quality" and "environmental protection"
when we speak of environmental problems relating to interior products.
"Safe quality" refers to a product kind to people and "environmental
protection" refers to a product kind to earth-that is a decrease
of waste and protection of resources.
Terrapointe's
Specialty Products addresses
these issues head on. For safe quality, no toxic inks, dyes or finishes
are used in manufacturing. Thus no off gases are emitted to affect
personnel. As to the issues of environmental protection, non-wood
paper is made from resources other than wood pulp. The use of plant
pulp-Kenaf, (belongs to hibiscus group), Bagasse (sugarcane stalk),
Bamboo (rice family), are just some of the non-wood sources used
to make paper out of pulp.
The
use of these components, together with state of the art manufacturing
processes will not aggravate the environment, either in manufacturing
or disposal.
Specialty
Wallcovering is made up of product produced from:
Cellulose
- fiber pulp and other easily reusable resources provide the mass
or substrate from which paper is made or other product is added
Rayon
- fabric made from wood pulp cellulose from managed forests
Linen
- from flax, a highly renewable and natural plant
Polyester
- both recycled and virgin system used
Kozo
- tree bark Straw - fiber made from natural plant stems, stalks,
leaves, bark and grass
Kenaf
- a member of the hibiscus family, a fast growing plant found in
Southeast Asia, China, Africa and Southeastern U.S.A.
Calcium
- moderately hard metallic element, a basic component of bones and
shells, occurs naturally in limestone and gypsum
Zeolite
- Silicate material used in molecular filter.
By
utilizing a combination of the above components we re-introduce
centuries old rice paper as well as new mediums of wallcovering.
All blend the enduring elements of hand crafted paper, the tactile
qualities of woven fabric, and the vibrant visual interest of Rotogravure
printing to form innovative and impressive wallcovering.
The
first section of Specialty Wallcovering
is Saga. Saga is composed of 100% cellulose fiber, wash coated with
non-toxic inks to give a uniformity of color and top coated with
a washable finish.
Saga
features plain weaves, plissé (pleated or puckered) stripes,
over-printed straw weaves and classic grasscloth looks. A total
of 20 skus in organic and earthen colorways. You'll note that by
wash coating these products, there is a uniformity of color which
helps minimize shading and seaming
Next
is Mikado, a non-woven layered textile utilizing metallicized polyester
yarns laminated to the finest paper stock, over printed with state
of the art Rotogravure printing and finished with a water repellent
protective top coat. Two distinctive patterns are featured in 12
eye-catching colorways that reveal a spectrum of jewel-like colors.
Genji
makes up the third portion of the Specialty
Wallcovering offering. It utilizes the same construction process
as Mikado but without metallicized yarns. This in turn gives Genji
a matte finish in 14 terracotta-like colorways that bring a Mediterranean
stucco appearance to the wall surface.
The
fourth and final section is Washi. Washi is a collection of paper
backed natural fiber wallcovering with a non-toxic washable finish.
It derives its name from the literal Japanese translation: Japan
paper. Like the artisans who crafted this work in Japan centuries
ago, we still utilize old paper making techniques but combine them
with today's sophisticated manufacturing processes.
Washi
is a color story, a component story and a design story. If you lay
out the entire Washi section, you will see a spectrum of color that
reflects all of nature's elements: wood, earth, foliage and water.
The components of Washi: Kozo (tree bark), calcium (limestone mineral),
pulp (non-wood fibrous material), straw (stems, stalks, leaves),
Zeolite (silicate material), Kenaf (hibiscus family plant) and others
truly reflect nature's
building materials. And lastly, hot contemporary designs like confetti,
lizard prints, crinkled paper and ribbon stripes bring a very sophisticated
and contemporary look to an age-old product.
However
unique and complex the construction process may be in making Specialty
Wallcovering, our product is Class A flame rated. It is ideally
suited for corporate, retail and selected hospitality locations.
All units are paper backed, 36" wide and have a washable top coat.
It is sold in multiples of 4 yards and packaged in 12 yard bolts.
